Description
Introduction Health professionals, including occupational therapists, are increasingly being encouraged to follow best practice, using research evidence to guide and support their practice. The College of Occupational Therapists (2005) stated that the onus is on each occupational therapist to ensure that his or her practice is based on the best available evidence and that he or she will be accountable for the quality of his or her work. One method of attempting to meet this requirement and develop evidence to support practice may be through the use of standardised assessments and outcome measures. Consistent use of outcome measures to evaluate the effectiveness of the occupational therapy provided is considered fundamental to the establishment of evidence-based occupational therapy (Law et al 2005). Laver Fawcett (2007) emphasised the need for standardised assessment usage among therapists as a method of enabling the measurement of clinically relevant change, and to demonstrate both the clinical effectiveness and the cost-effectiveness of the therapy provided.
